I’m having so much fun with this new series. I get to engage my design expertise by illustrating these fun designs on the computer using a Wacom tablet. This gives me the freedom to be iterative and precise – ensuring only the most perfect lines.

Once I’m finished with the concept and design phase, I transfer my design to a prepared watercolor canvas (that’s a whole other blog post!). I begin by painting the lines with black acrylic. This is a tedious and highly precise phase – as the lines must look as if they were computer-made, with a consistent line thickness.

The painting phase is the fun part. Here is where I can let the magical mineral interactions of watercolor create incredible textures and vibrant color. Notice how in this series, the painting is self-framing. The edges are also painted canvases and contain fun little hidden surprises related to the theme of the painting. In this case, the beginner’s pink golf ball is still lost in the rough and the tee is still with us even on the 19th hole.

This humorous series is my chance to express my silly and irreverent side, my design expertise, and my love of watercolor all in one.
